Delaware restaurateur (and Delaware Restaurant Association board member) Bobby Pancake has an inspiring story of working his way up from a part-time job to start his own business. But as he explained in an op-ed in the News Journal, this story isn’t unique to him:
I’ve seen the same success in many young employees that view an entry-level job as an opportunity, not a dead end. Restaurants provide an unparalleled career ladder for men and women of all ethnicities and backgrounds. According to U.S. Census Bureau data, growth in restaurant ownership among minorities and women outpaced growth in the overall restaurant industry during the last 10 years. 80% of restaurant owners started in the restaurant industry in an entry-level position.
